There's actually a story behind these (totally gackable for any Devonian) icons.
Now, as anyone familiar with this part of the country knows, Devon Farmers (especially Young Farmers, Mole Valley Farmers and People FromWoolfardisworthy Woolsery) have a fairly strong, pirate-y, accent. It's probably because we're all descended from wreckers and convicts, which is as close as you can get to piracy while staying on dry land.
People from Appledore are strangely proud of this.
So in the background, we have the Devonshire Flag (or the Devonshire Flag tilted). Apparently there was a kerfluffle about us wanting a flag like the Cornish do in 2004, so now we have a flag.Which apparently brings us one step closer to a separatist movement like the Cornish do. Why does no-one want to be part of England any more? We're going to end up with the UK consisting of London and East Anglia, Black Country and the Midlands, some bits of Wales and the RoI sooner or later, because once one gets independence, the rest'll try for it. And we'll drag Dorset out with us because they've got some of Dartmoor.
Hm... How much of the South West will be England rather than Devon&Cornwall-land?
...
And now I've been looking at maps for what seems like ages, I've lost all trains of thought. So, um. Icons. Icons pretty.

Date: 2007-02-15 06:36 pm (UTC)Mapmakers. I blame mapmakers and the people who make drop-down lists that say 'United Kingdom' instead of 'Great Britain' or 'British Isles' or even having separate items for the component nations.
I reckon that 'the UK' is just a political invention - I mean: THE United Kingdom. There's probably loads of Kingdoms that consider themselves to be fairly united. We aren't the only monarchy left, are we?
We should just go all old fashioned and call it 'Britannia'. ^_^

Date: 2007-02-17 11:19 am (UTC)Well, exactly. The United Kingdom of what? I suppose I'm as guilty as the drop-down list people myself, though - it's a lot easier to just write UK than to type out Great Britain every time.
But - Britannia! That is such an awesome name for a country. :D I don't why people don't use it more often.
