| You're working at being anti-racist. Good for you! You may, however, mistake racism for an individual prejudice when it more often functions as an institutionalized system. In fact, one of the ways racism has adapted itself in the days since Jim Crowe is through the widespread adoption of Colorblind Ideology. Colorblind ideology teaches people that everybody is equal, but also makes it very difficult for them to discuss race, as just mentioning it can make one "racist." This unfortunately prevents people from critically examining system-wide racial inequities. For example, say in a given classroom, 3 black students are doing very poorly. The teacher will likely assume that the studets' individual circumstances are impeding their progress. But say across the school, 3 out of every 4 black children are performing below their potentials. The faculty may still blame it on individual circumstances so as not to "sound racist" by saying the black students are doing poorly, thus preventing them from analyzing what's going wrong in their classrooms and fixing it. So the moral of the story is go with your good instincts, but don't be afraid to look for and critically thing about the big picture. It makes you less, not more, racist. See Other Categories
