Dec. 28th, 2006 04:52 pmETA because I wasn't making any sense whatsoever: In 524, I want Chase to start somewhere in Northern Europe at say, 4 years old, and then get to Atlantis (which should be within a few weeks of travel from China) before the age of 7.
I just found the most useful map for 524 on the German Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Karte_v%C3%B6lkerwanderung.jpg - I don't know why I didn't go there first, seeing as I was after Germanic migration patterns of that time. Even though it seems that the Goten get to Turkey 200 years early and the Saxons start moving at the right time but have no chance of getting even level with Africa even if I did send some of them 'magically off course'.
...
Or, y'know, I could just shove Atlantis East and have it off of Oman instead of Korea. That's doable. -_-;; I wouldn't have this problem if I wasn't so set on Chase being of European (preferably Nordic) origin! Arg! Do you think I could add a '1' in front of the date for the travel and then remove it? Sir Francis Drake went to the exact right place... I may have meddled with narrative-time too much already, I fear.
Okay, the Westgoten get to lower Greece somewhere around 400AD. And they must have boats. So if they get across the Mediterranean and cross the land round Cairo...
...
This was so simple when I hadn't done any research and could just say 'Pirates did it!' That was before I bought a book that claimed to be a complete History of Piracy... but then told me that it was only going to focus on the Caribbean, from 16?? onwards. Bah.
It did tell me that Piracy was 'banned' during the life of the Western Roman Empire, though. And that 'most' former Pirates were resettled as Farmers...
I could have them (the Pirates) go all the way around Africa instead of ploughing through Eurasia, but that... This is before the advent of the sail, so I'm supposing it would take too long and wouldn't stick with extra deadweight. On the other hand, a cabin-boy with influence over the water could probably help keep a boat running for a long time. So maybe it's possible?
I think I can take up to about two years for the journey. Perhaps an early Saxon ship is sent off course and keeps going around France and maybe Portugal, and then is shipwrecked. That would set him to be the same area as the Vandals... about 40 years after they've started across Mediterranean Africa. Hm.
Perhaps they could get through the Gibraltar straights and continue down the Mediterranean, then ... Maybe not. What's North? Ice. Okay then.
There'll just have to be a lot of changing of hands involved. There'll be someone travelling somewhere at any given time.
That's it, then. The Silk Way, and lots of trading. After all, if I'm going to make Constantinople go 'splody in the last act, I better introduce it.
