Another one bites the dust...

Well, the wording that it used was 'voltage too low to charge', or something similar, so I assume that some resistor has been shorted out, or the 'voltage in' wire(s?) have been compromised or something.
So I've wacked it into 'power saver' mode, decreased the screen brightness considerably, and left it plugged in. If my hypothesis is correct, leaving it plugged in might drain the battery rather than charge it, but after a night of being plugged in the '% available' is the same as when I switched it off (95), so it seems safe.
*hopes that the battery lasts until the tech guy can have a look*
