Actually, since this conversation, I bought the Naruto DVD, and it has the uncut version, both in English and in Japanese with English subtitles. The dub's better than the English subtitles because it keeps the Japanese terms intact. The subs translate them, but it's not the same. It's not quite right.

Anyway, I take it back. The dub's actually quite good. Not perfect, but much better than some other dubs. *shudders at the thought of One Piece* Jetix just edits the hell out of it. On the DVD, without any cuts, it's very different.

And, on the flip side of the coin, many Japanese anime and video games incorporate English words and phrases into their sentences, where they could easily have said it in Japanese. In the Japanese version of an ep of Naruto, Naruto says, "Thank you!" in English. And Jap!YGO is chock full of English words (the names of cards and monsters and whatnot). I guess it's supposed to sound "cooler" when certain things are said in a different language.
