Me = nerd. I just made a seat-plan for the first year Slytherins during their Sorting feast. And, as they're Slytherins, where they sit during the Sorting defines the rest of their lives just as much as the train ride does.

Millie Baron Malfoy Davies Roper Dudley
Goyle Crabbe Pansy Daphne Harry Theo Zabini

(Yeah, Slytherin!Harry and wizard!Dudley)

I've got Zabini off on the end, hidden behind the ample Sophy Roper, as a bit of a loner. Malfoy and Pansy are in the middle of one end, and Theo and Tracey Davies are in the middle of the other, because both sets make themselves into leaders of slightly different circles.

Malfoy starts off with mainly Crabbe and Goyle, Pansy starts off with mainly the 'Slytherin Girls Gang' (Davies, Greengrass, Roper, Bulstrode). Theo is already friends with Harry from the train, so they stick together.

By the beginning of fourth year, however, it changes a bit. Malfoy still has Crabbe and Goyle, but the Slytherin Girls Gang is no-longer united. Pansy and Bulstrode hang out with Draco's lot, and Davies has taken over the rest of the Girls's Gang (which seems to include Theo and Harry more and more). Dudley seems to have ended up, eventually but effectively, as Zabini's Crabbe&Goyle equivalent*.

*I remember whydoyouwanttoknow's 'Living with Danger' series having wizard!Dudley make 'Crabbe&Goyle' become 'Crabbe, Goyle and Dudley', but I don't see that. Dudley is a brawny bully like them, yes, but he's also a muggleborn and accustomed to leading the bully-troupe, not mindlessly following it.

*

So yes, I've done (most of) the Sorting. And Tracey Davies seems to be a politician already - first she shoots herself in the foot by calling attention to her half-blooded status, but that's to detract away from the fact that through the whole Sorting Feast she's using body language to make some of the others defer to her.

And, Nymphadora Tonks, violet-eyed sixth-year extraordinaré. XD

Also, I'm amused by re-reading the Sorting scene in PS - The Gryffindor table is described as being on the far left, and it's implicated that Slytherin are on the far right. Intentional, I wonder?
